The Daffodils, Creeping Phlox and Snow Drops are blooming, and buds are on the trees. In Washington DC the Cherry Blossoms are blooming and the annual visit is underway. All the signs of Spring’s arrival on March 20th! Outside the beauty of the season reminds me that there is spring cleaning to prepare my home and yours for the change of season. 

What do you do have to do for Spring cleaning? This post is one of a series to give you helpful tips for getting started. If you decide to do the cleaning yourself or have professional cleaning help with getting started to refresh your home. Here are a few tips on how to get started. 

Planning your Spring Cleaning: 5 Tools for Dusting 

Baseboards, ceiling fans, dusting blinds, behind and around electronic equipment. Pay particular attention to vacuuming and dusting behind comfortable chairs and sofas. This is important for homes with pets where fur gathers and catches underneath furniture and behind furniture and on walls. Did you know that dust also accumulates behind hanging pictures and artwork? 

Dust has a way of getting in and behind furniture, fixtures and surfaces. When dusting is put off long term a layer of dust will collect on the vertical surfaces – walls, lamp shades, etc. So be willing to move furniture and display items for thorough dusting. Consider spring cleaning these areas:

  • Baseboards
  • Ceiling fans
  • Dusting blinds
  • Dusting behind and around electronic equipment.

To clean and manage dust the following tools are helpful

  • Vacuum – most helpful vacuums will have extension hose for vacuuming high spaces. Vacuuming is easier when using the proper attachments – brush for baseboards and high corners, sofa attachment for removing pet hair from furniture. What are vacuum attachments for house cleaning?
  • Microfiber Cloths – these are an effective cleaning and dusting tool. When dusting spray furniture polish on to the cloth. Use clean dry cloths for dusting electronics. 
  • Dusters with extension rod. These dusters with extensions are 
  • Swifter Duster Extender – this handy tool makes dusting really efficient. The handle extension allows for high dusting (cobwebs), low dusting like baseboards, blinds, and hard to reach area like behind display cabinets. 
  • Consider wearing a disposable mask. Dusting can affect even if you don’t have allergies. The mask helps to avoid the sneezing frenzy that can happen.

Deep Cleaning

What is considered deep cleaning? Attention to detail. Usually cleaned every 3 to six months.

• Hand wiping ceiling fans/blades.
• Cleaning light fixtures such as dining rooms and living rooms.
• Wiping down blinds.
• Cleaning walls, doors & door frames
• Vacuuming baseboards
• Cleaning windows/ window sill.
